WHAT IS DOGPARKOUR?

Dog parkour is balance training for your dog.
It involves letting your dog jump up on, balance on, jump over, crawl under and through a various of obstacles that exist in your surroundings. It is a fun form of training that can be trained anywhere and it is suitable for all types of dogs. The training gives your dog an incredible body awareness and control, something that many dogs today lack.
The physical control provides a mental control and with the right tools, dog parkour can solve many of our typical problem behaviors such as lunge, hunting and pulling on the leash. As your dog builds its balance and self-confidence your dog will increase its self-confidence even in other situations. And by you taking active and fun initiatives for balance training on the walks, your dog will also become more contact-seeking and compliant.

HOW TO START
Start by teaching your dog to put it’s front paws against different objects. Most dogs can easily jump on objects and therefore it is good that the dog gets a chance to learn to distinguish between front and rear paws. The rear does not always have to follow automatically. Start with walls or trees as these, they are stable objects with a surface that provides good grip.
Make it challenging by teaching the dog to put his paws against poles, lampposts, armrests on park benches, stones, walls, fences, electrical cabinets ... the list can be made at any length.
Over time, your dog will build up its balance and cope more and more. Always be careful and stay close, do not challenge too much, keep the training at a healthy and sensible level. It should be fun to train dog parkour, both for your dog and you.

TO THINK ABOUT
When your dog jumps up on various obstacles, it is important to keep in mind how and where it’s landing.
A dog already puts up to 80% of its body weight on the front paws and therefore a lot of stressful wear and tear when the dog jumps down from things.
Receive the dog in the harness to minimize the pressure of the landing or lift it down from the obstacle.
It is also possible to find objects in the surroundings that form stairs up to higher obstacles, which becomes more gentle for the dog to get up and down from.
Always train reward-based, if it goes wrong - redo or go ahead and try something else.

WE ALWAYS USE HARNESS
Always use a harness on your dog when you train! It helps you receive and support the dog on more difficult obstacles.
There are great risks with training in collar. The dog can be subjected to involuntary jerks if it loses balance and it can have devastating consequences and cause major injuries to the back and neck.
